A systematic examination of ten cases—Gregor Mendel, Bernhard Riemann, Emily Dickinson, Ada Lovelace, Hilma af Klint, Vladimir Vernadsky, Ignaz Semmelweis, Henry Darger, Alfred Wegener, and Vincent van Gogh—demonstrates a recurrent structural condition: epistemic latency, the delay between a system’s internal completion and its external detection. These cases span biology, mathematics, literature, computation, painting, earth systems, medicine, narrative art, and geophysics, yet converge on a single empirical law. Each field achieved operational closure—manifested through corpus magnitude, recursive coherence, and conceptual integration—prior to recognition, with latency intervals ranging from approximately 20 to 100 years and averaging 50–60 years.
The mechanism underlying this delay is not qualitative deficiency but infrastructural mismatch. Mendel’s genetics required cytology; Riemann’s geometry required relativistic physics; Lovelace’s computation required machines; Wegener’s continental drift required tectonics; Dickinson’s poetics required modernist interpretive frameworks. In each instance, the field existed as a complete system without receptors. Recognition emerged only when adjacent infrastructures matured sufficiently to register the already stabilised density.
