Stavroulaki reframes pedestrian modelling as a central problem of sustainable urban development rather than a specialist subfield of spatial analysis. The paper’s iconic proposition is that pedestrians do not move like regulated vehicles: they follow perceptual continuity, angular change, navigational ease, attraction and social negotiation, making cognitive geometry more relevant than conventional link-node traffic abstraction. Space Syntax therefore becomes a model of the potentials for movement produced by spatial configuration, not a simulation of isolated individual trajectories. The methodological contribution is explicit: angular betweenness and angular integration are tested across multiple radii alongside accessible built density, attraction variables and multiscalar street types, then related to observed pedestrian counts. The paper argues for a transition from explanatory to predictive modelling, better generalisation across urban environments, experimentation with representations and measures, and design-support tools. Its wider bridge is to operational planning theory: spatial description becomes valuable when it can predict future conditions, support scenario analysis and enter ordinary design decisions before expensive physical commitments are made.
