Üstün and Ek formulate the “felt city” as an urban condition produced through the interaction of sensory input, memory, emotion and cognitive interpretation. Their study of two pedestrian corridors in İzmir combines questionnaire-based case selection with guided walks and semi-structured in-situ elicitation, translating atmospheric theory into a structured field method. The paper’s strongest methodological contribution is sensory–cognitive mapping: visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory and gustatory signals are not simply catalogued but related to affective associations and spatial situations. The concept of “moodmosphere” names a second-order layer in which sensory stimuli become meaningful through memory, attachment and cultural familiarity. This prevents atmosphere from being reduced either to measurable environmental generators or to private feeling. The work bridges phenomenology, aesthetic ethnography and urban design by producing a transferable framework for mapping multisensory experience while preserving contextual variation. Its wider significance lies in extending urban image theory beyond ocular form toward a relational account of perception in motion.
