Droste and Gianoli replace singular causality with configurational reasoning. Their fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of greened Berlin neighbourhoods asks which combinations of conditions are sufficient for green gentrification and which support its absence. The study finds no universal green intervention type—park size, function, scattered greening or transport connectivity—that consistently produces gentrification. Instead, neighbourhood context, particularly pre-existing green-space availability, plays a decisive role within multiple causal pathways. The methodological importance lies in the use of QCA to study complex urban outcomes as conjunctural rather than linear. Green gentrification is not generated by one spatial feature but by combinations of preconditions whose effects differ across cases. This offers a precise bridge between planning and complexity theory: urban interventions acquire political consequences through context-dependent assemblies of location, value, accessibility and existing conditions. The work cautions against universal prescriptions such as “just green enough” when their success depends on relational urban structures that cannot be reduced to park morphology.
