Huang and colleagues demonstrate that the city seen from above and the city seen from the street are epistemically different environments. Their study of Guangzhou combines satellite-derived NDVI with street-level Green View Index, building morphology and land-surface temperature, using OLS, geographically weighted regression and multiscale geographically weighted regression. Both aerial and pedestrian greenery correlate negatively with heat, while building density and volume increase it, but the two green measures reveal distinct spatial patterns. The iconic contribution is this dual perspective: urban vegetation cannot be represented adequately by canopy or land-cover data alone because street-level visibility captures shrubs, lawns and green walls that aerial sensing misses. Methodologically, the paper joins remote sensing, computer vision and urban morphology. Its wider bridge is to environmental epistemology: every instrument constructs a different urban nature. Thermal planning therefore depends not simply on data abundance but on understanding what each sensing regime can and cannot perceive.
