Simwanda and colleagues provide a rare comparative environmental measurement across Lagos, Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Lusaka. Using Landsat imagery, land-surface temperature, urban–rural gradients and landscape metrics, they show a strong positive relationship between impervious surfaces and heat and a negative relationship between green space and temperature. Yet the value of the paper lies less in a generic claim that vegetation cools cities than in the variation among urban configurations. Lagos, with the highest impervious coverage, is markedly warmer; Nairobi combines lower imperviousness and higher green-space share with cooler conditions. The methodological operation is a controlled comparative spatial frame—common 40 km × 40 km study areas—capable of revealing both shared mechanisms and city-specific outcomes. Its bridge to African urban epistemology is decisive: environmental comparison becomes useful when it preserves differences in climate, morphology and growth rather than dissolving them into a single continental condition.
